Linking Britain’s industrial heritage with the modern railway

With an eye to the future, the far sighted management team has welcomed commercial tenants to the site and the number of railway-related businesses based here increases every year.

This has allowed further commercial expansion and the profits are re-invested in the continual upgrading of the site’s facilities. Recent projects include the extension of the sidings on the eastern side of the site, a new office administration block and a fuelling point.

The Depot

The depot is rail connected to the national network and is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Heavy engineering workshops have been built to accommodate modern rail maintenance, repair and modification businesses. The site can also provide secure indoor and outdoor accommodation for rolling stock.

Network Rail, DB Schenker, DRS, Freightliner, GBRF, Colas, BARS, West Coast Railways and VSOE (Orient Express) all regularly move trains and rail vehicles into and out of Barrow Hill.

We also have facilities for easy loading and unloading of rail vehicles onto road transport. The site is fully compliant with ORR and HSE requirements for the operation of rail facilities.

Railway Research

Newcastle University's NewRail research facility is based at Barrow Hill and the site is also used by European railway research centres.

With a comprehensive range of railway infrastructure on site, training companies can provide courses for a variety of competences from PTS for track workers to customer services and senior management training.

Team Building Days

The National Railway Museum at York is one of several companies that have used Barrow Hill for team building exercises.
